The last post of a surprising series blending book editing and boudoir:

After a story has chosen you and gripped you with its fascinating, intriguing mystery, you try to capture it, pin it down.

But the story whisks you away in an unexpected direction. You chase it again. It turns from you, around a corner, escapes into a dark room.

You open its door and enter. Now you can’t see anything.

Then. Your eyes adjust.

You see her. Barely, at first. Your muse. The story—in the flesh. The heart and soul of glorious truth. Everything under all the layers that had enticed you. Everything you wanted to know now laid bare.

What do you do? Do you dive in? Do you hesitate? Do you pace back and forth? Do you feel the responsibility of taking her on?

She is suddenly deeper and more impactful, riskier than expected. She’s not just a fun fling. She’s the real deal.

She’s commanding the plot. Revealing her character arcs. You can fill in the setting, impose the motives, clamp down details.

Respect the story. Let her pull you in. Play. Explore. Enter at your own risk. Be enraptured by this story.
